Total War: Shogun 2 - The twilight of the samurai

He arrived in late March, the new standalone expansion (in the sense that it requires the original game) Shogun 2: Total War, entitled Sunset of the Samurai. We got to get my hands on preview of a small portion of the code of the game in single player version, just to get an idea of the full menu. We start from what is obviously the most important news, already revealed by the excitement of opening movie: the historical setting. The period chosen is the second half of the nineteenth century, during the War Boshin, to be precise, the new campaign begins in 1864, the year of social tension due to the increasing hostility towards the colonial power and influence of 'West. The push and the industrial modernization process leading to inevitable economic and social change, bringing out both militant nationalism as sentiments of intolerance against the shogunate. Assisting in the background, the United States, Britain and France, all three decided to leave their imprint on the land at the dawn of the civil war that will determine the future of the Rising Sun.

To progress

The presence of these Western powers obviously means the transmission of new technologies, not only for economic progress and production but also for military purposes: katana arrows and will thus compete with guns, rifles and machine guns from 400 revolutions per minute. Moreover, it will be essential to conduct relations with these presences to optimize the recruitment of foreign units and ensure a steady progress in terms of technological breakthroughs. In this era of great change, the player is tasked with taking a leading role on the chessboard Japanese taking control of one of six new clan - three in favor of the Emperor (Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa) and three were loyal to the shogunate (Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai). Made this first selection (implemented in the code preview the choice lies with the Satsuma clan more progressive and open to trade with the West, which means greater ease nell'arruolare veterans and foreign agents) must roll up our sleeves and start to give a thrust to the technological progress, to leave behind the old feudal and increasingly detached from rivals. Initial operations will take place on the strategic map, which immediately highlights how the management of infrastructure is more important than the preservation of foodstuffs. Do not forget that this is the age of steam and horse tracks: the introduction of the railroad and the consequent development of urban areas are vital not only to ensure supply and trade more efficient, but also to travel faster than the ideas - in other words, gain access to the various branches of research.

But beware: not all the population is in favor of progress, indeed! The technological evolution goes hand in hand with the dissatisfaction of the traditionalists and then it becomes crucial to know how to dose the new import without creating too much friction with the more conservative segments of the population. The new steam engines are not content to reshape trade on the mainland but are ready to transform the movement by sea, crucial for a nation that is in fact an archipelago consisting of (in this regard, we note the presence of a new island, Ezo, which extends the map to the north).
